David Hockney

David Hockey uses very vibrant colors making his paintings very realistic. This particular painting is called "The Portrait of the artist" from 1972. The colors in the pool and the mountain and hill shadings in the background make it very real. In this painting Hockney was going through a phase of depression because of complications in his love life. When first looking at the image I thought that maybe he was watching a loved one swim, but after learning of his mental health at the time. I am starting to think that there is a darker turn, maybe that is his significant other drowning in the pool while he watches.
