Marina Abramović

This piece is called Shoes for Departure and it is an installation piece. It was installed in 1991 and its medium is hewed amethyst. I like this piece of artwork because I have never seen something like this before. I also love how it is made out of a crystal. Overall I think this is a very unique piece of artwork.

This is called Rest Energy made in n1980. I don't necessary like this piece but I just think it's an interesting piece. I feel as though there's a whole story behind it or someone can just make a story out of the situation. I find it interesting how they both are leaning back to each other and how the bow can hold both individuals. I'm also wondering why the arrow is pointed at the woman and the decision as to why it's like that and not the other way around.

Marina Ambramovic - Aesthetica Magazine

The following artwork is by Marina Abramovic, a Serbian-American performance artist as well as an writer and art filmmaker. The following image represent relationship between performer and audience. Which is one of the themes that her work explores. This particular image caught my attention because of the way they use hair in this image. I like the position of how both individuals are sitting. As well as, both individuals' hair twisted together makes this image more appealing to look at. However, this is one of the many things that she worked on. Her other work display the usage of her own body as a subject and vehicle. 

Maria Ambamovic:

The Artist is Present was a 2010 piece (MOMA) where Maria Ambamovic sat in a red dress and stared into the eyes of 1,000 strangers. Each time she would close her eyes after and would open them for the next. On this moment, she opens her eyes and unexpectantly is staring into the soul
of her ex-husband. It is a beautiful moment as you can feel everything they are thinking without either saying a single word. You feel sorrow, loss, and love. Ironically he ended up suing her 5 years later over not being credited for joint work.

Marina Ambrovic's work commands your absolute full attention. This piece caught my eye (literally) when I saw how focused and still the subject of the work was. This piece has a feeling to it, almost as if it is staring back at its spectators.

Marina Ambrovic's artwork is very different. It's very powerful. One would think that it would be odd or weird. But in fact this is very courageous. She stood for 6 hours and told people that they can do whatever they want to her and she will take full responsibility for it. What these people did are horrifying. It makes me sick to my stomach actually. She was so loyal to her project that she let them humiliate her, undress her, even cut her neck. It's sickening what people will do or think of, and she was able to show exactly how sick individuals can be.

Marina Abamovic: Lips of Thomas Series

Marina Abamovic uses her own body as subject and medium.  A photographer by the name of Ulay took series of pictures of her art from 1976-1988.  This picture is of a women laying down, head  down,arms stretched out in form of a cross, with what appears to be blood on her stomach.  A Pentagram drawn on the wall and what seems to resemble a swing.  Abamovic has a very dark sense of art, mixing satanic pentagram with normal star. She's a cutter who justifies it by explaining that by cutting she can overcome pain which was very cultural for her.  I found disturbing and shouting Mental Health at it's finest.

Marina Abramovic and Ulay-- the art is present

This is Marina Abramovic at one of her artistically influenced statement performance in 2010. Marina created a movement called "the artists is present" at the museum of modern art in New York City. Inspired by her belief that stretching the length of performance serves to alter the perception of time and engagement in life, she sat for hours a day looking into the eyes of strangers while saying absolutely nothing. During her performance, a former lover Ulay sat down in a chair across from her and both were forced to stare into each other's eyes and not say a word. He left her teary-eyed and the next individual filled the chair. This moment held such a powerful statement and was such a shock not only to the audience but the Marina herself.

Rhythm 0 was a 6-hour performance art piece done by Marina Abramovic. She had the public use her as art and place different objects on her in the way that they wanted it without any limitations. I thought it was very different because most artists tell people what to do, however Marina was the one being told what to do.

This is Marina Abramovic's Rest Energy. It was made in 1980. Marina says that this was one of the most difficult pieces she has preformed considering she was not in complete control. It took 4 minutes of a performance. I picked this one because it traveled very far on social media that I remember looking at it when I was a lot younger. I like this one because It requires total trust and has a very dark and deep meaning for couples and love.

Marina's artwork is a little different from the others that we have blogged about. She is a performance artist. In this particular piece she appears pinned up against the wall by the ironing board. Maybe showing that the work she was doing had her drained. She is fully stretched out, almost helpless dangling. My best guess is that it is a display of a wiped out housewife.

Robert Arneson

I really like this piece by Robert Arneson because like much of his works, they're are pretty funny looking but also hip at the same time. I also love the colors used in this piece. You can see just pure joy and elation in this piece through the wrinkles in the face and eyebrows, as well as the double chin.

Arneson created self- portraits in pottery and glazed ceramics as seen here.   Almost all of his art are of himself,  his motto was that no one knew him better then himself therefore was able to create his form in many different arrays from comic to morbid.  This piece of art is the head and neck of a man with grey hair and beard, white collar shirt in his late age. The base that holds this glazed ceramic is the full body of Arneson with graves of Greek & Roman heroes.  The base showed his fate with Cancer taking over his body and life.  The accuracy is astonishing.

Model for 15 Heads Balancing, 1991

In 1991 Robert Arneson created his sculpture "Model for 15 Heads Balancing". This bronze piece displays 15 heads varying in size from small to large as they balance bilaterally on various planks. This reminded me of overthinking in a sense and how balancing/outweighing thoughts to maintain mental stability is common.  Some heads face different directions which can be interpreted as another point of view but in the end it all comes down on one head.

Robert Arneson made this piece called "ear piece" in 1991. He made it out of ceramics and glaze. These two heads are actually a self portrait of Arneson. This captures his silly side, such as giving a wet willy to somebody. I like Arneson's work a lot. It is a little strange and provocative, but it shows the silly, childish side of the artist. That's what I like, instead of it being so serious. This statue is held on display in San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. This is also a part of his "self-reflections" series.

Robert Arneson's artwork is unique in may ways. Unlike many sculptures that depict the human form, Arneson's subjects are clothed and in color. This aspect of his work gives his final products a more modern touch. This particular piece has details that I have not seen on many other sculptures such as the detail in the beard and its color, and the ripples in the sleeves of the shirt that bring this piece to life.

Fatal Laughs is a piece done by Robert Arneson. This piece stood out to me because it has pops of color that are appealing to the eye. Its almost describing someone who is plain on the outside with color pouring out from their inside.

This sculpture is called Cheek and was made in 1992. I see two men angry each other and it looks like one is biting the other. They are both old and one has a angry face and the other is biting the face of the other. I love how he captured the expression of the faces and how it really it very detailed to the point that it looks like you can see the blood coming out. Everything about this sculpture is very detailed.

I selected this particular sculpture because it is so different and odd. It appears that the heads are "twins" where one is licking the other's ear. We see one of their eyes is closed and the other one has an unamused eye expression. The detail in the face, from the wrinkles to the hair make it look real. The necks are oddly shaped and turned but in reality that is how we bend and curve our necks without realizing. 

Reflective

Robert Arneson was an artist who used clay to create his sculptures. This is one of Arneson's clay self portraits called "Reflective." This was created in 1989, a few years prior his death. The colorful classes against the neutral tone of the rest of the piece caught my eye. I also found it interesting that he made the lenses of the glasses broken. Lastly, I liked  the texture applied to his beard.

Robert Arneson was known as an American sculptor and professor of ceramics. He is remembered as the father of Funk Art. His work can be found in major institutions around Washington, D.C., the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, and the Smithsonian American Art Museum in Washington, D.C. I picked the sculpture above because I found it to be humorous. I feel like the tongue out and fingers in the ear makes this artwork interesting to look at. In my opinion, Arneson's sculpture is amazing, it has great details and looks very realistic.

I enjoyed this sculpture because of its fun nature and message. The telephone is almost shoved towards the mouth with the hand abnormally placed. I also liked how one eye is almost surprised and widened while the other is closed shut. The wrinkles add a touch ass well facial features are well displayed.

Robert Arneson: Poised to infinity.

This is Robert Arneson's "Poised to Infinity" made in 1991. It is made out of Bronze and is 85.98x30x27.99. The estimated value is $70,000-$100,000 and is currently in auction this week. I picked this piece because I find it very interesting to have the balancing act of the heads getting smaller and smaller. I imagine the detail of the smallest head is still similar to the biggest.

Robert Arneson created this artwork called Fatal Laughs. I decided to pick this piece of artwork because I loved how he used all three of the primary colors in this. I also love the texture of the face how it looks like it is breaking. Overall I believe this is a very creative piece. 

Georgia O’Keefe

For my final, I plan on doing a canvas painting of a flower using acrylic paints. I like the way that Georgia O’keefe made the flower life life and the color contrast to make the petals stand out.

Charles Young Walls

I chose Charles Young Walls for my final project because I like his particular style of painting. I wanted to pick someone who used a more textured, blurred technique. The backgrounds and bodies and the painting have little detail but the face has the most attention to it. I have to pick someone in my life to paint. His use of color I also like because the clothing and accessories pop out more.

Paul Signac

I like that he uses pointillism in his work it looks amazing the way he combines all these colors from light to dark. Therefore, this is what I want to pick for my midterm to try to paint a painting from Paul Signac a landscape with different colors going from lightest to darkest. And, doing various colors to do so as well. 

Paul Signac - The Pine Tree

Paul Signac created this piece in 1990 and it's titled The Pine Tree at St. Tropez. He used pointillism to create this painting. I'm choosing this artist because I would like to try this medium because it is outside of my comfort zone. I'm thinking about using a picture of a Christmas tree also.

Inez Longivial is a french artiste that i don't think she is that much popular. Her art is so simple yet so meaningful. some of her art has lots of flowers and its because she loves romance and she believes flower is a way to show love. I'm a person of patterns too so i like how she used different colors to form a pattern and it makes me want to do something like this.

Guy Harvey

In addition to being my favorite artist and inspiration for almost every piece I create, Guy Harvey is widely regarded as the world's premier marine wildlife artist. His works are more then just paintings of fish as he is able to capture these majestic creatures in their element doing things such as schooling, chasing after their next meal or hitting the artificial lure of a fisherman. The depth and life that he is able to create is unlike any other artist I've ever seen, and I am extremely passionate about both the subject of his works and his ability to create an underwater masterpiece with just his hands. 

Salvador Dali

The "Ship with Butterfly Sails" cause my eye from because of its bright colors and unique design. Each butterfly is vibrant and different in character. The clouds swirl thick in a clear blue sky and radiates happiness and creativity. Dali is best known for the Surrealism Movement as he created this oil piece in 1937. This is one of his most beautiful works as it shows a type of freedom and hope.

Vincent Van Gogh

Van Gogh painting of the window in the studio amazes me because of my fascination of windows. I enjoy looking out or being near one while working myself so it would be a good inspiration for me to paint my own workspace.

Romare Bearden

I decided to choose Romare Bearden to influence my final project off of. For my final project, I want to make the "perfect woman". Society makes women want to be so "perfect". With their perfect large breasts, small waist, thick thighs, big butt, small arms. It doesn't matter what the face looks like, but the figure of the female. So I want to exaggerate this unrealistic thought and make the "perfect woman". I will be doing this through collage. I am not quite sure if I want to do something like this collage and make the woman a silhouette with the a colorful background. Or to make it realistic with a woman in a bra and underwear, or a clothed woman.

Julie Marie Hansen

Julie Marie Hansen specializes in alcohol ink art where she draws flower-like patterns over the colored blotches with a thin white marker. I'm fascinated with how beautiful and elegant the colors slightly blend with each other. I'm not sure if I want to create the flower-like shapes or if I want to think of an alternative object such as exaggerated lips or body parts.

John La Farge

John La Farge was an American artist that was best known for his stained glass artwork but he used other mediums as well, including watercolor. I want to do a watercolor painting for my final project in this class and his paintings were the most interesting and pleasant too look at in my personal opinion. He has several watercolor paintings of flowers, especially water lillies. I like how watercolor is detailed enough but not so much that it looks extremely realistic. I hope to do a watercolor painting of some sort of flower for my final project.

Pablo Picasso

The following artwork is by Pablo Picasso, named Le Rêve (French for "The Dream"). Picasso created this piece of art in 1932 with oil paint. It is a portrayal of his 22 years old mistress. For my final I will be mimicking his work. I will sketch a design based on a picture I have already taken of a person. I will be working on the face and body to create a sense of cubism. I will be drawing the picture not from just one angle but from different viewpoint to show the object in detail.

Andy Warhol

For my final I wanted to do something out of my comfort zone. Warhol tends to use very vibrant colors and does the same painting but interacting colors that usually would not go together. I want to portray this in my own way.

John James Audubon: Carolina Parrot

John James Audubon is an American Painter and Ornithologist (expert of birds). When studying birds of North America he also made beautiful paintings of them to show others what he had seen. Between 1827 and 1838, he printed 435 life size water colors all from hand carved plates. His paintings would include the natural diet, scenery and group interactions of the birds. I chose this artist because I enjoyed how vivid and detailed his bird feathers looked. Also, I enjoy how he brings out the parrot colors against the plain background.

I really like the color scheme in this painting and how it is very dark but has some bright colors. It reminds me of Peter Pan because of the guy with the green. I really enjoy this painting it makes me feel like the couple was going through a rough time, and the women depends on the guy. I love how the painting seems like it has shapes in it such as squares and ovals. 

Marc Chagall- Printemps

Marc Chagall created this piece titled Printemps in 1938 using lithography. I chose this picture because of the odd nature of it. Somehow the goat, violin, and girl all flow together in a nice way. I also like the detailing on the goats pants.

Marc Chagall is known for his brilliant colors and folk style art pieces.  This mono print has a couple sitting on a roof of a barn with a full moon and an angel flying in the night sky.  It's a beautiful picture of a man holding his love.  I found this piece full of expression.

This mono-print done by Marc Chagall is called Le Cirque (The Circus). I picked this piece of artwork because I really liked all the colors in it. What especially stood out to me was all of the primary colors. The drawings are loose yet you can still tell what is going on. Again I really enjoy this, it looks very fun!

This Piece is absolutely gorgeous. His use of colors that are both vibrant and complement one another really makes this print special. The detail in this print is what separates it from other prints of its kind in my opinion. The texture of the leaves and the beautiful birds and animals all add to this piece very nicely. Overall, a wonderful, attention-grabbing work of art.

Soleil dans le ciel de Saint-Paul

This painting stood out to me because of the color contrast. I love the color blue and the yellow really popped out. It's a different type of painting that makes you think. It almost looks like its a sunny day and there is a man on a tree playing an instrument and the figures in the sky are dancing / floating to the music.

Marc Chagall paints in a very raw real way. His paintings have a particular flow to them. I chose this painting, siren and fish because it was different. A lot of his other paintings include the cuddling or glued together people in a circular motion. The "mermaid" in this painting is just floating around the sky. I am guessing its the sky because of the moon and building looking images in the distance. The face of the mermaid was also odd, the orange hair draws you straight to it.

I enjoyed this particular monoprint because it shows a lot with one single color. I also enjoy it even if it isn't as professionally drawn and appreciate its meaning. The strokes are also going towards one way.

This is a painting called blue Lovers by Marc Chargall. It was made in 1914. i love the color of this image and it shows two people showing love to each other by touching each other. Also, he does all these art about his wife and how much he loves her and she always has to approve his art before he bring it out to public and i like that about him personally. It is nice to see how much of an impact his wife has on his paintings.

Marc Chagall-Autumn in the Village

Marc Chagall was known for his early modernist. He would create art through all the different forms of artist methods, such as painting, book illustration, strained glass, stage sets, ceramics, tapestries and fine art prints. Chagall created this painting name Autumn in the Village. I chose this specific artwork because it's unique. The design and details included are very interesting to look at. The design of the tree makes this painting stand out more. I found the placement of certain objects to be uncommon but I believe this is what makes the painting. To add on, I like the colors utilized, overall it makes the painting look old fashion.

The Birthday- Marc Chagall

This is "The Birthday" by Marc Chagall. It was made in 1915 on a  32x40 cardboard with oil. In the picture it looks like there is a women who is preparing some sort of meal and is surprised with flowers and a unique looking kiss. This painting was inspired by Chagall's Wife, Bella. This was painted only a few weeks before he and is wife got married. I really like the cubist style brought to show surprise, happiness and love within the couple. 

Bataille de Fleurs (Carnaval of Flowers) from Nice and the Côte d’Azur, 1967

This piece is called Bataille de Fleurs (Carnaval of Flowers) from Nice and Côte d’Azur by Marc Chagall. I chose this piece because just from my perspective, it's very visually pleasing. I love the main tone of blue that he uses; it's pastel and light blue and very soft. It somewhat reminds of me Christmas with the carriages in the sky carrying the flowers. Also when translated, I believe the title translates to "battle of flowers" which I think is nice and contradictory to what a battle is. However, this could be an actual depiction of the Carnaval of Flowers in Nice, which is one the biggest carnivals in the world. It's a very pretty color lithograph.

Spring by David Hockney

David Hockney enjoyed painting of English woodlands and leafy alleys.  This painting is of the woods and a pathway, lots of greenery and trees.  I like this picture because its soothing and just beautiful.

Breakfast at Malibu: David Hockney

In 1989 David Hockney created his oil piece, Breakfast at Malibu. This painting captures the vitality of Hockney's home or as he put it "my little house in Malibu is the Pacific Coast Highway; at the other side is the beach. I step out of my kitchen door and there, right here, is the sea."The sense of the ocean's constant movement is captured in thrashing whorls of bold blues. greens, and aquamarines. In the back, the pointed shapes often suggest mountains as it is a poetic interpretation of land-sea.
