This 1995 painting by artist Jenny Saville is one of the many pieces that she has created that display the imperfection of the human form in a beautiful way. Her mastery of texture and contrast truly separate her from any other artist that we have seen. Very few of Saville's works feature a human that is pictured in a standard position. Instead, she positions the subjects of her paintings at angles that allow her to prominently feature every curve and crease in the woman's figure. My initial opinion of this piece and her work in general was one of confusion as I knew that without knowing the meaning behind her art, I would never fully understand her purpose in painting such abstract pieces. Upon further research, I now understand that Saville specializes in painting the female nude with a heightened focus on figure and detail. This art is not for everyone, but it is difficult to not appreciate a master of such a unique and precise craft.
