Jenny Saville - Branded (1992)

The artwork above is called Branded, it was created in 1992. This painting is a nude self-portrait viewed from below. The words delicate, supportive, irrational, decorative, and petite are written on the body backward. Saville has stated in the past that "I'm not painting disgusting, big women. I'm painting women who've been made to think they're big and disgusting." She is known to undermine the idea of a typical woman's body based on beauty and feminine qualities. However, my first expression about this painting was it's different since I haven't seen anything similar to this in the past. In my opinion, it seemed a little unusual for a famous piece of work. But after reading the meaning behind it, I believe it's pretty amazing what Jenny Saville created here.
